White Tree Frog

WHITE_TREE_FROG.jpg

White Tree frogs originate from Northern and Eastern Australia, Indonesia, New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Timor. They can vary in colour greatly from a light lime green, jade green, blue green, olive green to a reddish or purplish brown. The average full grown frog is around 4 inches.

The Average Life Span of a White Tree Frog is around 10 years.

Housing
Vivarium:
Adult White’s Tree Frogs are arboreal, so require a taller terrarium than most amphibians. A glass terrarium with good ventilation is better apposed to a wooden vivarium as it holds humidity better. The smallest size recommended is 45x45x60 but bigger is always better.

Chameleons love to climb so make sure there is plenty of environmental enrichment in the terrarium such as thick vines and branches. Artificial plants are another good idea so the frog has somewhere to hide in.

Substrates such as orchid bark, peat and moss can be used to line the vivarium floor.

Temperature/Humidity:
The ideal temperature for your White’s Tree Frogs is a temperature gradient of 25-28°C with a slight temperature drop at night or 2 or 3 degrees. This can be achieved by using a guarded infa-red bulb or ceramic heater. Either of which should be used in conjunction with a thermostat.

White’s tree frogs need a moderate humidity level (around 60 percent). Misting the area twice daily will help with humidity levels. A hydrometer can be used in conjunction with a thermometer to keep the humidity & temperature in check.

Lighting:
Unlike lizards, frogs do not need any UV light, which most other reptiles do require, but a strip light on 10-12 hours a day will illuminate the Vivarium and will promote the natural day/night cycle.

Cleaning:
Remove faeces and uneaten food daily. Food/water bowls should be washed and dried each time fresh is put in. Vivariums should be totally cleaned out every couple of months or so with reptile-safe disinfectant.

Feeding
White’s Tree Frogs should be fed 2-3 times a week with a varied diet of appropriately sized gut loaded insects, including locusts, crickets, earthworms and caterpillars. Feed 4 or 5 insects per White’s Tree Frog per feeding. The live food should be dusted with calcium and vitamin supplements once a week.

As adults your White’s Tree Frog should be able to feed on the occasional pinkie mouse, but you should regard this as a treat item as regular feedings on mice can cause your Tree Frog to become obese.

Water
Fresh water should always be available and changed daily, this can be provided in a shallow water bowl. Although some wont drink standing water they will also use it to bath in.

Handling
White’s Tree Frogs have delicate skin, but can tolerate moderate handling. Make sure you have moist and clean hands or wear gloves.
White’s Tree Frogs may look like they have slimy skin, but appearances can be deceptive, because you will find upon handling them that they feel more waxy than slimy.

Cohabitation
White’s Tree frogs can be housed with other tree frogs, but care must be taken to ensure they are similar sized to avoid cannibalism, as White’s tree frogs may eat smaller frogs if given the opportunity.
