Stick Insect

SYICK_INSECT.jpg

There are many different types of stick insects but the most commonly kept are the Indian stick insects.

The average life span of a stick insect is 6-12 months.

Housing
Vivarium/tank:
Vivariums can be provided by a glass tank, a plastic geo or a flexible mesh Vivarium. Which ever one you choose, make sure that they are escape proof.

Substrate such as peat, spider life or vermiculite can be used to cover the tanks floor.

Heating:
Although room temperature is normally sufficient enough to keep them warm, a heat mat can be used to keep a constant temperature in the Vivarium.

Humidity:
Most stick insects need to be sprayed daily to keep a high humidity; this also helps with the shedding of their skin.

Lighting:
No special lighting is needed for stick insects, normal daylight from a window is sufficient.

Feeding and Water
The best food is provided by fresh bramble leaves which need to be replaced soon as they start dyeing. Some species will take other leaves such as privet; make sure wherever you take the leaves from that they are pesticide free. Water can be provided by either a dish of water full with gravel or use bug gel, which is a jelly that allows the insects to drink without drowning.

Handling
Handling should be kept to a sensible level as over handling of the insects may cause unnecessary stress. Legs can easily be damaged or pulled off so great care needs to be taken when handling stick insects.

Cleaning:A spot clean should be done daily, taking out any dead leaves and any sloughed skin. A total clean should be done once a month using a reptile safe disinfectant.
